The Legacies of the Presiding Officers
By: Kaitlyn Buttery
One of the main goals of KUNA is to help change the world, but as it has been mentioned before, you must start small. Media Corps sat down with a few of the current PO’s to discuss current world issues and the impact KUNA has made. Many of the PO’s talked about how KUNA gives students the passion and drive to go back to their communities to make a change. Additionally, Presiding Officer Alex Johnson advised first-year attendees to go ahead and speak up, that the first time you stand in front of the committee and speak is the hardest.
Continuing the press conference, the PO’s were asked what legacy they wanted to leave behind as they venture onto their next step in life. Secretary-General Ayesha Nasir swiftly answered and said that she wants students to know that they have a voice. She went on to explain that the PO’s are our equals, they should not be put on a pedestal just because they are residing on the stage. She later went on to mention that it is not her voice only being heard, but the entire conference’s voice. Her words of advice for the upcoming officers and KUNA attendees is, “I want you to wonder. To look at the world with a new perspective, to find a passion and to do something you love.”
KUNA is constantly changing, and as many of us go off to college and start our life in the real world we leave KUNA to the next generation that will soon take over. To help make the transition easier Media Corps members asked the current PO’s what advice they would give to the up and coming officers. Their answers varied but mostly consisted of being open to trying new things. Many of the officers described the amazing friends they have made through the years and the passion this program has instilled in them.
At the end of the day KUNA is not just about the platforms you run with, and what you are passionate about, but it is about how this conference has given many students the courage they need to make a change. With the power to stand up and make a difference in the community KUNA attendees will have the ability to create greater solutions and hopefully change the world.
