The Earth is…Flat?
Nearly 20 centuries ago in 3rd century BC, the flat Earth theory was disproven by Hellenistic astronomy. Or so we thought. For centuries before 3rd BC, the idea of Earth being a sphere had been a speculation but once the flat Earth theory was disproven, most assumed it to be an absolute fact that we live on a round planet. Up until recently, you could ask anyone you know, meet, or come in contact with, and they would say with confidence that the Earth is round. However, despite being taught for centuries that the world is in fact round, there are modern theorists promoting the flat Earth theory once again. Through social media platforms, people are bringing this theory back into the public eye despite it being mocked by the masses.
St. Xavier High School has appeared to jump on board with this theory, bringing a bill on allowing the flat Earth theory to be taught within schools. When KYA 2’s attendees caught word of this, they exploded in hysterics. Is this real? Are they serious? Is it all a joke and do they really believe the world is flat? Everyone was astounded that a delegation would bring such a “foolish” bill. While some speak in support and others opposing, nobody can deny the confusion around the bill. With so much speculation, there could be more mysterious than one might think.
When two of the bill authors were approached about it, they responded with quite ambiguous answers until asked: why did you want this bill to pass and why did you decide to write this bill? One author stated, “Last year, I read the book 1984. Information was strictly guided by the government in the dystopian novel. The U.S. might not go down as radical but the state does require us to learn… common core.” He spoke of how he believes information should be open to anyone who has the desire to know it. While the flat Earth theory might be an extreme example, the authors explained that information should be available no matter what it is. The withholding of information is often a big reason behind tyranny and chaos among the masses. When speaking to other St. Xavier students, as well as their current candidate, they spoke of how everyone is “reacting exactly how [they] want us to” and that they “don’t really want to spoil the surprise.” Considering this, is it possible that there is more to this bill than one might first believe?
On the other hand, there have also been rumors of St. Xavier taking the most radical, off the wall bills due to Ryan Clifford being governor and unable to reward the school for any bills they bring. The authors and members of the St. Xavier delegation, when spoken to about the bill, all seem to keep their answers very ambiguous and light hearted. When spoken to about how others believe that the bill is a joke, they said that people must have “bad taste” to assume such a thing. Others said they are insulted that people would believe they would take such an “esteemed Kentucky Youth Association and make it a joke.” When asked about personal beliefs, the authors stated that, “when we look towards the horizon we don’t see no curve.” Their answers all carry a sense of humor that continues to add to the idea their bill is meant to be taken as a joke.
With so many differentiating opinions and rumors being spread around, nobody has yet to figure out what exactly this bill is representing. Is this leading to a more serious topic of our government controlling our nation more than our country should allow? Or is this just a game to mess with us all? St. Xavier is known for their lighthearted and enthusiastic actions after all. I guess we will have to wait and see. But like they said, look to the horizon and you won’t see a curve.
