Plea for a Greener Kentucky?
Louisville, KY — As the first day of the Youth Assembly comes to an end, various legislators have brought significant issues to light. Perhaps, most pressing is Governor Clevenger’s environmental policies.
Today, there were two significant bills heard. Most pressing is CW 5, introduced by Bullitt Central High School. This bill embodies the social sustainability and eco-friendliness that would help the Governor pass his agenda. CW 5 is known as, “An Act Relating to the Dissociation of Coal Mining”. According to sponsor Meg Redding, “Coal mining is an essential industry to Kentucky, but those falling into poverty should have another option.” Sen. Redding further stated, “This bill is not bad, it covers post-secondary aspects with job and technical training.”
CW 28 introduced in the house, has similar effects. It’s title is, “An act to eliminate the use of mountaintop removal coal mining.” This bill is more straightforward, explaining the environment threat the beautiful Appalachia hills of Kentucky face due to our coal industry. Not only a threat to environment, it poses huge implications on the wildlife that call the Eastern Coalfields their home.
In summary, passing these pieces of legislation would be hugely beneficial towards advancing the Clevenger Administration’s environmental agenda. The question is, will it pass? As the Governor said in his opening speech, “I’m counting on you to believe in people.”
