Guide to Media Corp.

How does one survive the absolute insanity that is KYA Media Corp. Well, to be frankly honest, you barely do, if you’re lucky. But, to all those brave enough to take the leap, here are the vital steps.
- Always have food on hand. You will get hungry, and want to stress eat more than you should. To ensure that this is possible, I would bring food everywhere (even the capital chambers). My favorite: fruit snacks, aka the food of the Gods.
- Don’t take anything too seriously. This is just a conference, an important one that people will remember for the rest of their lives, but it is just one weekend. Just have fun with it. This will be one of the best weekends of your life, so take full advantage of it.
- Take so many pictures that your fingers are numb. The more you take, the more likely you are to get one good picture, although the others might be crap. That’s ok though, because those aren’t the ones people are going to remember, or see. Ever
- Make connections. Although some people are really annoying, you can still meet amazing people that you will stay in touch with through the years.
- Don’t be afraid to get up close and personal. The people presenting are not going to bite you if you get too close, so don’t be afraid to get right in front of the podium. In my opinion, we are some of the most powerful people at this conference, so take full advantage.
- Always play the jams. Having classic 70’s and 80’s rock is the only thing that will keep you from going mad from working literally all the time. When you’re in the dance, I’m editing articles and making sure the newspaper looks presentable. The other Media officers are working on conference videos, and making our presence known on Social Media. So, you might not see us all the time, but we are not slacking.
- Make sure to always make fun of Ryan. It is easy to be able to do this, considering how dorky he really is. If you’ve ever been in a room with him, you’ll know. Example: “I’m keeping Kentucky YMCA fresh.”
- Take advice from other people. You can’t be stubborn if you’re going to be a part of something as collaborative as the Media Corp.
- Just because you can’t speak doesn’t mean you can’t make your voice heard. Whether you are writing an article, or making a broadcast, it is worth it to still express your opinion in a respectful and responsible way. (WCHS kids: safe, respectful, and responsible.)
- Don’t be afraid to make a fool of yourself. Broadcast team is being silly all day long, and the amount of times you laugh with people you have never met before is ridiculous. Be crazy, dance around, write satirical articles about the steps to survive media corp. It is 100% worth it, I promise.
So kids, if you are thinking Media Corp. is something you would like to do, MAKE IT HAPPEN. Be part of one of the most amazing programs in the world of Y-conferences.
