Our world has incorporated a wealth of technology into our everyday lives. From banking to communication, technology plays a crucial role in the success of these services. However, cybersecurity has become an increasing concern when working with online technologies. It acts as primary prevention for crimes such as identity theft, ransomware, and copyright infringement. Cybersecurity can impact everyone’s lives; even those here at KUNA.

Although it appears in the Secretary General’s agenda, there are only two bills authored on the topic of cybersecurity; Resolutions 61 & 71 presented by Singapore and the United States respectively. I managed to catch up with the authors of Resolution 71 to see why they believe cybersecurity is essential to our world. Shria Holla responded to the preceding question with the following, “ The world is becoming increasingly dependent on the cyber world. This strengthening connection means that it is more imperative than ever to ensure the safety of the common man, their community, state, nation, and the world. We wanted to draft a resolution regarding this to ensure as much global safety as possible from a, hopefully, international effort.”

The internet connects people the world over. With it comes the ability to meet people and experience places you may never have the ability to. With it, however, comes the innate proverbial catch. The internet isn’t a perfectly secure place but, that’s where cybersecurity comes in. With the weight of the internet on its shoulders, it’s importance shouldn’t be understated. As a result, although not overwhelmingly represented, cybersecurity and the bills pertaining to it are extremely important and relevant to everyone around the world.
