Our candidates for High School KUNA 1 2020 are preparing to serve with a presiding officer team the upcoming year. We interviewed some of them to get more insight on their beliefs and outlook on the conference. We asked a series of questions that were pretty similar in each interview. The candidates’ responses were similar, but they also took very different approaches at answering them.

The first candidate we interviewed was Isaiah Pruitt. He said the platform he was most passionate about was having quality education across the globe. He went on to explain that he would fund K-12 education and providing educators that can teach science, technology, engineering, and math, also known as STEM. Not only would this put kids in the classroom, but would also build up infrastructure in third world countries. He says that it’s a “natural human right” to go to school and that the UN even states that. This is what he believes makes his platform unique.

Pruitt also said that if he could help any country in the world, first, he would help Venezuela in pushing for democracy. He makes clear that he is for capitalism and democracy in all parts of the world. Pruitt states that he would love to visit, build up infrastructure, and do mission work in Venezuela.

Finally, when asked how he would convince someone to come to KUNA, he gave a very simple answer. He said, “the people”. Pruitt states that the smiles and friendships are priceless and that he loves KUNA.

We also interviewed Reese Holtzman and asked her a few of the same questions. She said that the platform that she felt the most passionate about was her platform about climate change. She describes it as a “recent and pressing issue” and says that it directly affects our future. This is unique to other candidates because she suggests that with this platform, countries would work individually within the United Nations because of the vast difference of resources among them. However, they would come together and work together on this specific issue.

We asked Holtzman what country she would help first and why and she quickly answered. She had heard a resolution in Kenya where they relied only on one lake, Lake Victoria. However, that lake is polluted and toxic. She said that they have no way to get clean water and it is leading to disease and malnutrition.

All candidates had great platforms this HS KUNA 1 and showed everyone that they care for the world.
